Motivation for Starting the Blog
I started this blog back in 2011, though I didn’t even remember creating it until I stumbled across it during a Google search of my name. My wife was sick then, and I was drowning in anger and helplessness. Someone once told me every serious writer had a blog. I’ll be damned if I wasn’t going to be taken seriously — even if I didn’t know what I was doing with it.
At the time, it wasn’t about building an audience. I was just trying to write my way through something I couldn’t fix. I’ve solved hard problems my whole life — but that one, watching someone I loved slip away, broke me in a way nothing else had. Writing was the only thing I had that didn’t ask for solutions. It let me feel what I was afraid to say out loud.
Mangus Khan wasn’t supposed to turn into all this. He was just a character I was kicking around for a novel I never finished. But before I knew it, Mangus became more than a name — he became me. There was no turning back the clock, no putting the genie back in the bottle. I didn’t plan it. I never looked back.
In 2023, I made the choice to keep this space alive and see what it could become. It’s the framework of something I’ve been carrying around in my head for decades. I wanted to grow as a writer — to see if there was any real interest in the kind of stories I wanted to tell. When I returned, this blog had 42 members. That was enough. I kept writing until I got sick. Then I recovered and came back swinging, writing without expectations.
Lately, I’ve been working on building a larger space to house all of this — something broader, something that reflects everything I’ve come to care about. I still don’t have any big expectations. Some people retire and fix up cars, build boats, and travel the world. I tell stories.
Expectations for Audience and Reach
I didn’t start this blog expecting a crowd. When I found it again in 2023, it had 42 members, and that felt about right. I wasn’t chasing followers or clicks. This was just a space where I could clear my head and cleanse my soul.
Then the strangest thing happened: people started showing up. And they stayed. I never expected that. I’m still blown away, honestly.
I’ve been fortunate in life — I’ve traveled around the world, solved complex problems, and worked with people from all walks of life. That was my world for years. But as much as I accomplished in that space, I’m not sure it made the kind of impact I feel now. That’s because of the reader engagement. The comments, the conversations, the quiet understanding from strangers — it’s different. It’s human. And it’s deeply personal.
I still look at other blogs and wonder how they pull it off — all that strategy and polish. That’s never been me. I just show up, write, and try to keep it honest. If that’s enough for people to stick around, then I’ve already received more than I ever asked for.
Hopes for Personal Growth
At first, I was just trying to survive. But somewhere along the way, I realized I had grown — not just as a writer, but as a person. Maybe it’s age. Maybe it’s everything I’ve lived through. But I have a deeper, more meaningful appreciation for things now — moments, words, silence, people.
When I decided to keep this blog going in 2023, part of it was a challenge to myself: could I still push my craft? Could I write with more clarity, more courage, more control? I wasn’t chasing perfection. I just wanted to be sharp. Clear. Unafraid to say what mattered. To explore what was still inside me, and maybe even finish the novel I’d started after my wife passed.
Writing forces reflection. It exposes the things I usually keep buried. And growth doesn’t come from breakthroughs — it comes from the grind. From showing up on the blank page when no one’s watching. That’s where I’ve grown the most.
Expectations Around Content and Consistency
When I first started, there was no plan. No roadmap. Just the need to write. I figured maybe I’d post once a week if something came to me. But life doesn’t follow calendars, and neither does creativity.
What’s come out over time has been a mix of fiction, essays, and visual art — sometimes sharp and focused, other times loose and wandering. I never set out to define a genre or lane for myself. I just followed what moved me.
There were stretches where I disappeared — illness, life, burnout. And there were stretches where I wrote constantly, chasing down stories, experimenting with form, pushing myself to see how far I could take a single idea. After I recovered, I kicked things into gear and just kept going. Not for clicks. Not for an audience. Just to stay in motion.
I thought about organizing the content more, making it cleaner or easier to follow. But I’ve found that consistency for me isn’t about structure — it’s about showing up with honesty. Whether it’s fiction, a personal reflection, or a visual piece — if it’s real, it belongs here.
Surprises Along the Way
I didn’t expect to still be here. I didn’t expect Mangus Khan — once just a throwaway character — to become part of who I am. And I definitely didn’t expect people to stay, read, and respond like they have.
I never expected to embody Mangus Khan, but I have.
What surprised me the most, though, is how much this space has mattered — not just to readers, but to me. I’ve done work all over the world. I’ve solved big, technical problems and made decisions that impacted entire systems. But somehow, writing a story that makes one person feel seen hits harder.
This blog wasn’t supposed to become something. But somehow, it did — a record of survival, growth, grief, imagination, and unexpected connection.
Some people restore old cars in retirement. Some build boats. I tell stories. That’s the project. That’s the work. And if it ends tomorrow, I’ll still be proud of what came from it, because none of it was supposed to happen in the first place.

I said this because, at the time, Netflix was the hottest new thing. I believe we should read and spend with our families instead of having faces glued to a screen. It remains my opinion on the matter. However, the current trends and versatility of mobile devices aren’t lost on me. I read the other day and posted on this blog every day for over six months. Looking back at that period, I realize it was done using one of my mobile devices.
My preferences are my desktop for any major creative endeavor, such as video or photo editing, and my laptop when I’m writing fiction. One can’t go anywhere without observing someone lost on their screens. I suppose it is the way of the world, as they say. However, I was amazed when I discovered that someone studied this behavior and named it. It’s called Small Screen Addiction.

When reading this information, I was taken back primarily by the initial data focusing on the small-scene addiction effect on children. It makes me want to visit all the grandchildren and snatch their phones away. “Gave a damn book!” I see myself yelling in my rant. I’d have no hope of assistance from my children because they would wonder about the recipe, outfit, and lifestyle of a person they haven’t a clue about.

I discovered Sister Rosetta Tharpe by accident. I was working on my novel and let my Blues playlist play on. I found myself stuck between my prose and the music. It’s one of my favorite places while I’m writing. I found myself lost in an ole’ blues standard. However, the more I listened, the more I realized the tune was different. I stopped and looked at the artist’s name. It was Sister Rosetta Tharpe. I wasn’t familiar with the name, but her sound was familiar.
As I investigated her music, I realized why her sound was so familiar. I remember hearing her music playing in the kitchen of my grandmother. My grandmother would clap, dance, and sing along with her music while she prepared different meals.

With her distinctive blend of gospel, blues, and rock and roll, Tharpe had a far-reaching impact that continues to be felt to this day. I didn’t hear of Chester Himes until 2011. I was at a book fair when a random shopper approached me and started telling me about this amazing author. Strangely, he handed me a book, but it wasn’t by Chester Himes. Confused, I took the book, hoping he would leave, but he didn’t. The book was entitled Moth by James Sallis. Finally, he got to his point. It turned out that James Sallis wrote a book about Chester Himes.
Oddly enough, since that day, I have read several books by Chester Himes and James Sallis. I managed to collect a few original pulp editions of Himes’s work. Also, I picked up the Drive series by Sallis, which inspired the motion picture Drive, starring Ryan Gosling. What I haven’t done is read the book about Chester Himes written by James Sallis.

I was taken aback because of how much American culture influences Chinese culture.

I know its scary and you probably have been through a few therapies treatments that didn’t help or made things worse. Please don’t give up. Recovery is a real possibility.
After, my diagnosis, I didn’t know what to do. I knew I didn’t want to stigmatized or labeled. So, I tried to hide it. Of course, that didn’t help, but the following are methods I used to assist in moving forward with the condition.

Five years ago, my production team and I were discussing the direction of our current project. The crew caught the Ole` man on film running my mouth. When I updated this blog, they reminded me of this conversation. So I picked a few key points to share with you. I hope you enjoy it.
The conversation concerning self-doubt when it comes to writing has been everywhere. I understand this emotion far more than I care to admit. I struggle with my demons; Butch and Greta are a pain in the ass. I figure if they are going to hang out, stirring up trouble, I might as well name them.
RANDOM THOUGHT – A RANT? – PEP TALK?
I write these words for an unknown reason. Something keeps gnawing at me to speak, but I do not know what. Yet, I’m sure many writers have faced this exact issue, not knowing what to say or how to say it. I recall long ago when I decided writing was something I was passionate about doing for the rest of my life. Also, I remember feeling no one wanted to hear what I had to say. So I wrote my thoughts, dreams, ideas, and fears in a notebook. I hid its contents from the world. If I am being honest, I hid them from myself. The instance I doubted myself, I became defeated. A player in a rigged game, and I didn’t even know the rules.
Back then, you seldom heard words like; depression, anxiety, or low self-esteem. However, I remember phrases like, “Stop being a pussy” or “Get your shit together.” Today, people attempt to listen to the problems we face. It’s kind of nice. Anxiety, depression, and other mental issues are real. We must, as a people and society, respect them. Witnessing people getting the help they need and being true to themselves is beautiful. Yet, like everything, we go a little overboard if people let us. Somehow, amidst all the self-imposed crap, I kept writing. I’m not even sure how or why.
I kept looking for external validation of my talent. As if I needed someone to walk up to me and say, “Man, you’re one hell of a writer.” Yes, of course, this happens. Sometimes comments, reviews, and other accolades are plenty and fulfilling. However, what do we do when they don’t come? Your inbox is empty, and a deafening silence surrounds you. People you’ve asked to read your work avoid you. They are swamped now, “They haven’t had the time to read.” Or they give you, my favorite, the delicious lie. “My God, your work was amazing. I couldn’t stop reading. I read everything on site.” This utterance is coupled with a plastic smile and hollow sentiment.
You turn to a blank page and pick up a pen. Then, write your ass off. Whatever it is you’re feeling. Let it fly. Write the good, the bad, and the ugly. Tell it straight and write true. Let no one tell you any different, and when they do, simply look at them, and say, “Yahoo…Kiss my Grits!” Flo would be proud. No matter what, keep writing. It may not turn out you make it to The NY Times bestseller list. Or you may never win a covenant prize. However, what you have done is tell a portion of your story. I hope you realize this happens in every story we write. Don’t worry about it, and it’s okay; it’s just fine.
Sometimes my journal is my confessional, and my readers are my priests. Yet, some things chronicled within those pages are mine, and I bear their weight alone as we do with certain things. My method or ideas aren’t for everyone, but writing them, and getting that crap out of my head, has kept me on this side of the veil. Where I have the hope of happiness, the urge for acceptance, and the whisper of redemption, I speak of it too loud; it may become vapor.
Somewhere in these words, I suppose, is a message to you, the reader, a pep talk of sorts. Yet, as I finish the closing sentence, this is nothing more than a pep talk to myself. I hope I listen.
What place in the world do you never want to visit? Why?
To me, this is a loaded question. Like there is just one place on this Earth, you would like to avoid. As if you randomly hear of a place and automatically decide never to travel there ever. Since I have traveled a great deal in my life, the question could be, where in the world you never want to visit again.
However, since that isn’t the question, I suppose I should act right and answer the question straight. HA! Anyone, who knows me, knows as an absolute certainty, except on the rarest occasions, I will not answer a writing prompt straight. Today is no exception.

Places that may have Cannibalism in their history:
Normally, this would be a thing, but I was planning a vacation with my lady, and she had a list of disqualifiers. Cannibalism was on the list. I can’t say this request is completely unreasonable. I’m a big guy. I have concerns. With a little googling, these names stuck out to me.
Places with a large monkey population:
While you are shaking your head at my response. You know you heard of Planet of the Apes, both versions; don’t play with me. Monkeys like to throw things at people. I’ve been a person who enjoyed things being thrown at them. I know me; I don’t do animal cruelty. So, it’s just best I stay away. These places stood out.

In honor of the writing community we know and love. I wanted to point out one of its legends for a few moments.

She was the first ethnic minority to win the Pulitzer Prize on May 1, 1950. In school, when it came to black writers, Langston Hughes, Richard Wright, and James Baldwin were familiar names. I can’t say that my school overlooked Brooks, but she seemed overshadowed by more popular poets. I discovered her body of work much later in life after I started attempting to write poetry. After several phone calls to the poetry clan announcing my discovery, most laughed and asked, “What rock did you crawl out from under?” They reminded me that Maya Angelou and Nikki Giovanni were the “really important” African American poets. I couldn’t believe my discovery and continued my research into the body of her work, finally getting my hands on an autographed copy of one of her books. After that, she became one of my literary heroes.
Gwendolyn Brooks was born in 1917 in Topeka, Kansas, and she published her first poem at 13 years old. When I think about what I was doing at 13, though I was writing stories back then, I lacked the courage to publish my work. Brooks has written over twenty books of poetry.
I would have never written a poetic line if it hadn’t been for the work of Gwendolyn Brooks. of course, many could argue that Brooks had nothing to do with my talent or ability. This opinion may be accurate, but the crazy part, I did not know. However, if Brooks hadn’t made her accomplishments within the poetry community and society, she wouldn’t have changed the establishment’s mindset. She made poetry cool. By the time I discovered and understood the magic of her work, a published poet, I also taught workshops. With a blown mind and new respect for writing, I immersed myself in reading everything I could get my hands on.
Here’s an interview I found online that tells an interesting story about when she discovered she had won the Pulitzer Prize.
How remarkable is this woman? I remember staring at the screen, thinking I would never be that good. Forget winning the Pulitzer Prize or any other award. I might as well roll up my quills and clean out my inkwell. Yes, I wrote with a quill and had an inkwell on my writing table. I was feeling myself with a few poems published, and radio shows in the works. I turned down everything and went to my former profession. Then, one day, a former student appeared out of nowhere and asked me a question.
“Are you going to finish what you started?” She asked, straight-faced and unapologetically.
I didn’t answer her at that moment. She turned and walked away, leaving me spellbound and speechless. Then, while preparing dinner, I exclaimed, “How dare she call me out like that? Rolling up on me like I’m soft or something!” The class started in an hour. If I left then, I could make it. Walking into class, I rocked a “Free verse rules!” T-shirt and a raggedy pair of closed-toed Tevas. Absent the salutations and idle chitchat, I launched straight into an analysis of Rilke’s “Faces” with no notes, guide, or any of the traditional materials I usually had for class. I lectured like that for the next six weeks.
I ended that workshop with, “One must be bold to matter, yet humble to make a difference.”
Thank you, Ms. Brooks, for inspiring one of my favorite lines in my career. Teaching that lesson to all the writers I’ve helped has been an absolute honor.
