Beauty Between the Miles

Daily writing prompt

The trip to Rock Springs was frustrating.

There were long hours, changing plans, fatigue, stops that took longer than they should have, and the thousand small irritations that seem to multiply whenever you are trying to get somewhere on a schedule. By the time enough miles have passed beneath you, the road can become nothing more than something to endure.

Then I looked up.

For a few moments, all of that disappeared.

The highway stretched toward the horizon beneath a sky crowded with clouds, sunlight slipping through them and spreading across the open land. Nothing dramatic happened. We didn’t stop. There wasn’t some great revelation waiting beside the road.

There was simply something beautiful in front of me.

I think we sometimes make the mistake of believing beauty requires peace. Yet so often, the exact opposite is true. Beauty can become more vivid when it appears in the middle of frustration, exhaustion, or uncertainty. Maybe it is the contrast. Maybe when everything around us feels difficult, we become more aware of the few things that are not asking anything from us.

That sky didn’t solve anything. It didn’t shorten the miles, change the schedule, or make the trip less tiring. But because the trip had been so trying, being given even a few moments to notice something beautiful felt greater than it might have otherwise.

Sometimes beauty is simply pleasant.

Other times, when you stumble across it in the middle of a mess, it feels almost like magic.

And perhaps that is why those moments become so much more joyful. You are not escaping what is difficult. You are simply being reminded that the difficult thing is not the whole world.

The problems were still there. The miles still had to be driven. Nothing about seeing that sky made the trip easier.

But for a moment, frustration was not the only thing happening.

There was still beauty out there.

I only had to notice it.
