Time Was Never the Problem

Daily writing prompt
What’s something you used to worry about but don’t anymore?

There was a time when I worried there simply weren’t enough hours in the day. Like many people, I believed the more I could cram into those hours, the more productive I was. We celebrate being busy, glorify multitasking, and wear exhaustion like a badge of honor. I used to buy into that way of thinking.

Over the years, I learned something different.

Time has never changed. Whether I’m here tomorrow or not, the sun will rise, the Earth will continue its journey, and another twenty-four hours will pass. Time isn’t running faster. We are.

Much of my career required planning. Before beginning a repair, I often worked backward from the desired outcome. What parts would I need? Were special tools required? Had I done this procedure before, or did I need to review the manual? Most importantly, what problems might reveal themselves once everything was taken apart?

Repair guides are remarkably accurate—until they aren’t.

A manual can’t predict a rusted bolt, hidden damage, or a previous repair done with more optimism than skill. That’s why mechanics sometimes discover additional problems after they’ve already begun. From the customer’s perspective, it may seem suspicious. From the mechanic’s perspective, reality simply revealed something that couldn’t have been seen before.

Life has a habit of doing the same thing.

No amount of planning eliminates surprises. Good planning simply leaves enough margin to deal with them without sacrificing quality. It reduces stress, not because everything goes according to plan, but because you’ve prepared yourself for the possibility that it won’t.

That realization changed the way I think about time.

I no longer worry about how much I can squeeze into a day. Instead, I ask whether I gave the work in front of me the time and attention it deserved. I’ve found that people remember quality long after they’ve forgotten how quickly something was finished.

Time was never my enemy.

My expectations of what I could accomplish within it were.

  1. Yes, indeed. Time was never my enemy – my expectations of what I could accomplish within it, was. Simple, True. Unmistakably accurate. You capsulate moments beautifully.
