I have collected hundreds of quotes over the years. Some challenge me. Some comfort me. Others remind me to keep learning. Choosing a single favorite feels almost impossible because the right quote often depends on where I am in life.
If I had to choose just one, though, it would be Cyril Connolly’s observation:
“Better to write for yourself and have no public, than to write for the public and have no self.”
I think about those words every time I sit down to write.
In a world that measures success in views, likes, followers, and algorithms, it’s easy to start writing for approval instead of truth. That path may attract attention, but it slowly chips away at the very thing that made your voice worth hearing in the first place.
Connolly’s quote reminds me that authenticity is not a marketing strategy. It’s a discipline. Every story, essay, or poem should sound like it could only have been written by the person holding the pen. If I lose that voice in pursuit of popularity, then whatever audience I gain comes at too high a price.
Ironically, I believe genuine readers recognize authenticity when they find it. They may not agree with every opinion or interpretation, but they know when someone is writing honestly.
I would rather spend my life writing words that are true to who I am than spend it chasing words I think people want to hear. Audiences come and go. Trends fade. Your voice is the only thing you carry from the first page to the last.
That is why, of all the quotes I’ve collected over the years, this remains my favorite when it comes to writing. It isn’t simply advice about writing. It’s advice about living.
