Sanity Is a Relative Term

Lately, I’ve been feeling a little punch-drunk. Not from anything poured into a glass, but from life repeatedly punching me in the face. And just when I think I’ve found my footing, the bastard throws another combination.

I’ve been wondering how a person maintains their sanity when the world seems determined to beat it out of them. Then another thought occurred to me: What the hell is sanity, anyway? Is it an actual state of mind, or just another word somebody invented to convince us there’s a proper way to survive the madness?

Perhaps sanity isn’t about keeping everything together. Maybe it’s about knowing when to let a few pieces fall without feeling obligated to pick them up immediately.

I don’t have the answers. Hell, lately I’m not even sure I’m asking the right questions. But I’m still standing, even if I’m leaning against the ropes and arguing with the referee.

And perhaps that’s enough for today.

So, tell me, how do you maintain your sanity when life refuses to stop swinging? Or have we all been chasing something that never existed in the first place?

When the inkwell weeps; I howl.

  1. I don’t maintain any sorta sanity, what for??? What i do is i work through the difficult spot myself. I don’t retaliate, I breathe, I allow my body, my heart to feel the wrongness and once its felt; I release it. And I make it through each and every day, with hopes it will be a better day than yesterday. I allow my heart to feel love or sometimes hate. As long as I’m feeling, than I know I’ll be good.

    Nice post, THANK YOU

    LOVE DALLAS

  2. I just get on with dealing with good days and bad days, but I know what you mean. Sometimes you wonder why everything is stacked against you and just when you find your footing, something else topples you off your feet.
I let it get the better of me once…………………….. never again. Circumstances are different, I’m different, and though I don’t consider myself that much of a coper, I get on with the matter at hand, then when everything settles, that’s my time to fall apart!

  3. But I’m still standing, even if I’m leaning against the ropes and arguing with the referee. I’m still standing even if I’m leaning against the cupboard for support and the big heaving gigantic butterflies are filling my being. No, I don’t have answers either. Sanity – just degrees of awareness and overwhelm? I don’t know
