Personal Reflection
It’s one of those quotes we’ve seen so many times that we almost stop hearing it. We smile, nod, and move on because, on the surface, it seems obvious.
Be yourself.
Simple enough.
Except it isn’t.
Long before we understand who we are, we’re taught who we’re supposed to become. We inherit expectations from family, schools, workplaces, cultures, and strangers who have never lived a single day in our shoes. Piece by piece, we learn to perform until the performance feels like identity.
I’ve come to believe that authenticity isn’t something we’re born with.
It’s something we recover.
Somewhere along the way, many of us traded curiosity for approval. We learned which opinions earned applause, which dreams sounded respectable, and which parts of ourselves were better left unspoken. Every compromise seemed small at the time.
Until one day we woke up wearing a life that fit well enough to fool everyone…
…except ourselves.
The hardest question isn’t, “Who am I?”
The harder question is, “What have I mistaken for myself?”
Removing those layers isn’t dramatic. It rarely happens in a single moment. More often, it’s the quiet work of choosing honesty over image, conviction over comfort, and purpose over popularity.
Perhaps becoming yourself isn’t about inventing someone new.
Perhaps it’s about having the courage to stop pretending to be someone else.
The world doesn’t need another imitation.
It has enough of those already.
What it has never had…
…is your honest voice.

It’s a good quote Mangus. I used it last week for the Great Minds challenge.
1981 to 1989, I was trying to be what was expected of me and lost my identify in the process. A hard lesson to learn but I was lucky to get out of a toxic relationship and rebuild my life.
