Personal Reflection

Long after facts begin to fade, stories remain.

We forget the exact date we met someone. We lose track of the words spoken across a dinner table decades ago. Faces soften around the edges of memory until they become more feeling than detail. Yet somehow, the stories endure.

We remember the teacher who stayed after class because we believed the story of being seen.

We remember the friend who called at exactly the right moment because it became part of the story that we were never as alone as we feared.

We remember a novel that quietly rearranged the furniture of our thinking because its story found a permanent room inside our own.

Joan Didion understood that stories are not ornaments we add to life.

They are the architecture of how we understand it.

Every day we tell ourselves stories about who we have been, who we hope to become, and what all of this might mean. Those stories shape our choices long before we recognize their influence. They become the invisible threads connecting yesterday’s experiences with tomorrow’s possibilities.

Artists contribute to that invisible architecture.

The work leaves the room carrying more than characters, images, or melodies. It carries ways of seeing. A single story can alter how someone understands forgiveness. A poem can give language to grief that had previously lived without a name. A photograph can preserve a moment that history might otherwise overlook.

That is why stories outlive us.

Not because paper lasts.

Not because files are archived.

But because human beings continue carrying them into conversations, into families, into classrooms, into quiet moments when another life suddenly makes a little more sense.

Perhaps we never truly own the stories we create.

Perhaps we simply care for them long enough to place them into someone else’s hands.

And from there, they continue the journey without us.
