BOOK REVIEW – High Fidelity by Nick Hornby
I had never heard of Nick Hornby before I read this book. The book’s film adaptation has been one of my favorites for decades. It disappointed me when the book was so different. Now, before you get fired up and say they’re always different., I know this exceptionally well. I became a fan once I got the rhythm of Hornsby’s writing style. The mixture of snarky attitude and music references was extraordinary. I reminisced over the soundtrack contained within the pages. These attitudes were the very things I loved about the movie. I genuinely believe you will enjoy this book. You might even love it, but it should be a decent ride if not.
Good Luck!!
Second & Third Read:
The things I babbled about previously still apply. However, this time I read it with the mindset I enjoyed this book once and wanted to see if I would appreciate it as much as the last read. Therefore, I read the story slowly. This time, I found I missed a good portion of the details, which caused me to conclude the difference I spoke of earlier. Of course, the book and movie will be different, but I enjoyed how well the two entities complemented each other. So, I decided to rewatch the film “for research purposes”. Yes, there is a necessity to be thorough in these matters. It thrilled my wife with my decision to rewatch a movie I had watched at least a dozen times; if thrilled, is giving your husband the evil eye as she sat down to the opening credits.
After we finished watching the movie, she handed me the book.
“Reread, dear?” she says, smiling.
I smile sheepishly and nod my head. After I finished the third read, she asked me to read my favorite parts aloud. She simply smiled as she shook her head; I read the pieces. She got a kick out of the section about Marie and Laura. She reminded me of my unhealthy fascination with a woman at a hot dog stand decades ago. What can I say? They were good hot dogs.
