Today, on Afternoon Time Capsule, we will revisit a bit of my childhood. I can remember countless hours spent watching the adventures of Starsky and Hutch. I had my mother buy a cap gun, and I ran around my backyard in my world of make believe. This might have been the precursor of my writing career.
A few minutes ago, I was informed that “Hutch” died at 80 years old. David Soul portrayed Kenneth “Hutch” Hutchison from 1975 to 1979 in 4 seasons and 93 episodes. I can’t be sure, but I think I watched every episode during its original airing.
Looking back, I believe one of the reasons I loved this show so much was that it was realistic. At least, what I knew to be realistic at the time. I was a fan of the Six Million Dollar Man, but I knew the only way I could be like him would be to get hurt.
Immediately, I began singing the chorus of this song.
This wasn’t the type of music I used to listen to at the time. I grew up in Al Green, Teddy Pendergrass, and The Four Tops household. Yet, I can remember my mother singing along to this song. She told me Hutch’s real name, and he sang the song. This song served as my introduction to soft rock. My musical palette continued to evolve.
Last year, while at a car show, I caught a glimpse of my childhood. This Gran Torino wasn’t anything special compared to the other cars at the show, but my friends took a moment to acknowledge the memory.
