Personal Reflection
Some doors don’t open.
You can knock politely. Pound your fists against them. Curse whoever installed the damn thing. You can spend years examining the hinges and convincing yourself that one more push will finally make it move.
Sometimes it won’t.
There are circumstances we can change, circumstances we can influence, and circumstances that simply refuse to negotiate with us.
Knowing the difference may be one of adulthood’s more expensive lessons.
I used to think persistence meant never giving up.
I’m not so sure anymore.
Sometimes persistence means recognizing that the battle has changed.
We waste enormous amounts of ourselves trying to force yesterday to produce a different ending. We replay conversations, negotiate with memories, resent decisions that cannot be reversed, and quietly construct alternate histories where we said the right thing at exactly the right moment.
Meanwhile, today sits patiently in the corner waiting for us to notice it.
Acceptance gets confused with surrender because both require us to put something down.
But surrender says, Nothing can be done.
Acceptance says, That cannot be changed. So what can I do now?
That’s a hell of a difference.
One closes the door.
The other finally turns us around.
There is freedom in understanding that we don’t have to win every battle with the past.
Some things cannot be repaired.
Some questions will remain unanswered.
Some scars aren’t waiting to become lessons. They’re simply scars.
But even when we cannot choose what happened, we still have some say in what happens next.
Maybe that’s where change actually begins.
Not when the world finally bends to our wishes.
But when we stop demanding that it must before we’re willing to move.
Reflective Prompt
What are you still trying to change that might be asking you to change instead?
