Personal Reflection

Sooner or later, every artist asks the wrong question.

Did they like it?

It’s an understandable question. We spend months, sometimes years, shaping something that exists only because we believed it deserved to exist. When it finally enters the world, we naturally hope someone else feels what we felt while creating it.

But approval is a restless measure.

One audience celebrates what another dismisses. One generation overlooks what the next discovers. Some of history’s most enduring works were ignored in their own time, while others that once filled theaters and galleries have quietly slipped into obscurity.

Success has always been a moving target.

Truth isn’t.

Georgia O’Keeffe understood that the artist’s first responsibility is not to popularity but to revelation. Every honest piece of work begins as something unknown—an emotion without language, a memory without shape, a question without an answer. The creative act gives those hidden things a place to stand in the light.

That is no small achievement.

Not every painting needs to become famous.

Not every novel needs to become a bestseller.

Not every photograph needs to hang in a museum.

Sometimes the greatest success is far quieter.

It is finally saying the thing you’ve carried in silence.

It is giving form to an experience another person believed they faced alone.

It is discovering that what once lived only inside you can now live inside someone else.

The work leaves the room carrying more than skill.

It carries witness.

And once it has done that, numbers begin to lose their authority.

Applause fades.

Algorithms change.

Reviews are forgotten.

But an honest piece of work continues traveling from one human heart to another in ways no chart will ever measure.

Perhaps that has been July’s lesson all along.

The work was never asking you to become successful.

It was asking you to become truthful.

Everything else is beyond the doorway.
