Of course I trust my instincts. These instincts are the reason I’m still here. They’re the early warning system that kicked in long before I had the language to explain what was happening. They’ve pulled me out of bad situations, terrible decisions, and moments where everything felt razor-thin. Survival sharpens you in ways calm living never will. Yet there are times you wonder if what you’re feeling is actually what’s happening. As someone living with PTSD, even after years of progress, the episodes don’t disappear—they just get quieter, less commanding, but still capable of blindsiding you when life hits at the wrong angle.

That’s the strange part: instincts are made of scar tissue and memory, not magic. They’re a patchwork of everything you’ve lived through—every mistake, every close call, every moment you had to react before you had time to think. And when your past includes trauma, those instincts can carry echoes of things you already survived. Sometimes they show up as alarms, even when there’s no fire in the room. It’s difficult to explain this to people. Not because they don’t care or don’t try, but because they don’t have a point of reference. If someone’s never had their body react to a memory like it’s happening in real time, or never had their nervous system jump to high alert over a sound everyone else barely notices, there’s only so much they can understand.

It’s not their fault. It’s simply the gap between lived experience and good intentions. But sometimes that gap feels like its own form of isolation. You end up minimizing what you feel or staying quiet because explaining it feels like trying to describe color to someone who’s only ever seen in grayscale. Eventually the question becomes: Why bother? And that silence can be its own kind of weight.

Even so, with the right support and coping tools, you really can relearn how to trust—not just your instincts, but yourself. Healing isn’t about shutting off the alarms; it’s about recalibrating them so they stop drowning out everything else. You learn to tell the difference between a real signal and old static. You learn how to talk yourself down without dismissing what your body is trying to say. You realize you’re not fighting your nervous system—you’re retraining it. Support and coping skills create space between the present moment and the past, and that’s the space where self-trust has room to grow.

But healing isn’t linear. There are days when every tool you’ve learned goes out the window. Days when your instincts feel unreliable, when your body reacts before your brain catches up, when everything hits at once and you’re back in old patterns without warning. Those days can make progress feel imaginary. But they aren’t the whole story. Because the very fact that you can name what’s happening now—the fact that you can reach for help, reach for tools, reach for clarity—means you’re not where you used to be.

Trust isn’t a single leap. It’s a series of small choices where you refuse to abandon yourself. Over time, instinct and self-trust start to merge again, the way they were always meant to. You move from surviving to navigating, and eventually, to living with a steadiness that’s earned, not imagined.

It’s not perfect. But it’s real. And real is enough.

Without peace, all the money, likes, and shiny milestones mean exactly squat.

Integrity — the forgotten art of not being a sellout. Not the performative kind either. I’m talking about the real-deal, do-the-right-thing-even-when-it-sucks integrity. It’s what you do when no one is throwing you a parade or handing you a blue checkmark for it. It’s not glamorous, but it’s what keeps you from waking up one morning wondering how you turned into exactly the kind of person you used to roll your eyes at.

Humility — the secret sauce that keeps peace and integrity from congealing into self-righteous nonsense. Humility isn’t about shrinking yourself or apologizing for existing. How Not to Lose My Mind by 6 A.M.

My cat is my alarm clock. Not metaphorically — literally. She’s the first thing I hear every morning, howling like she’s been abandoned in a void, despite living a life of uninterrupted luxury.

There’s no snooze button, no soft chime, no graceful start. Just claws on the floor, judgment in her eyes, and a relentless demand for breakfast.

So I get up. Not because I’m ready to greet the day, but because feline terrorism leaves no room for negotiation.

I feed her. I grind the coffee. These are the sacred rites of passage — the steps that transform me from a disoriented gremlin into someone who can form sentences.

If anything delays this ritual, I take it personally.
Why are you playing with my emotions? Who told you this was cool?

Once caffeine levels are in the green and nicotine’s holding the line — check, check — and the cat has retreated to whatever sun-drenched corner she’s claimed, I begin the real work: protecting my peace.

And look — I didn’t arrive at this approach because I’m naturally serene or some monk-in-disguise.

I got here because of the life I’ve lived. Because of the dents.
Because there are days when my mind goes rogue and starts offering me metaphorical jackets with buckles on the back.

“Give that a new coat,” it says. “It’s very nice. Leather straps. Fastens in the back. Do you want a new coat, Mr. Khan?”

And I answer like I’m seriously weighing the options.

And lime Jello is the truth. You don’t mess with lime.
Last time I cut up? They gave me lemon. No one likes lemon Jello.

That’s just mean. Downright mean.

So yeah, I’ve had to learn how to manage my mind, not just for peace — but for survival.

Calm isn’t some Instagram aesthetic for me. It’s a lifeline.
A way to keep the louder voices quiet and the darkness at bay.

That’s why I keep close something Alan Watts once said:

“Muddy water is best cleared by leaving it alone.

That line sticks with me because it echoes something ancient — something every major religion or philosophy seems to touch on:

The idea of inner stillness.

The anxiety doesn’t fade. It just lingers. Constant hum, just under the skin.

I forget what I was doing mid-sentence. I lose time. I react instead of respond.

And the worst part?
I can’t tell if it’s me or the world — and at that point, it doesn’t matter.


But I have to remember — the power to escape is within.

Not in some motivational-poster way.
Not in the “just breathe and manifest your peace” kind of way.

I mean that literally.

The same rituals I sometimes skip — the breath, the stillness, the silence, the coffee, the pause — they’re the tools.

The rope in the quicksand.
The key to the prison that looks like it has no door.

I have to choose to reach for them. Even when I don’t feel like it.
Especially then.

It’s not about fixing everything in that moment.

It’s about reclaiming one inch of space.
One breath. One clear thought.

Enough to remind myself that I’m not just a body riding out the chaos —
I’m a person with the ability to shift, to respond, to say:
“Not today. We’re not drowning today.”


A new pot sputters.
Serenity in a sip.

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can occur after going through or witnessing a traumatic event. PTSD can have a significant impact on a person’s daily life, relationships, and overall well-being. However, there are many effective treatments available for PTSD, that actually help. I know its scary and you probably have been through a few therapies treatments that didn’t help or made things worse. Please don’t give up. Recovery is a real possibility.

After, my diagnosis, I didn’t know what to do. I knew I didn’t want to stigmatized or labeled. So, I tried to hide it. Of course, that didn’t help, but the following are methods I used to assist in moving forward with the condition.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, is a widely used and effective treatment for PTSD. It involves speaking with a mental health professional about your thoughts, feelings, and experiences related to the traumatic event. There are several types of psychotherapy that are effective for treating PTSD, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a type of therapy that helps individuals identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors that are associated with PTSD. CBT focuses on helping the individual become more aware of the thoughts and feelings that contribute to their PTSD symptoms and teaches them how to challenge and change those thoughts and behaviors.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is another type of psychotherapy that uses eye movements to help individuals process traumatic memories and reduce the severity of PTSD symptoms. During EMDR therapy, the individual is asked to recall the traumatic event and then follow a therapist’s hand movements with their eyes. What do you do to be involved in the community?

When it comes to being involved in community
it boils down to this

We our brothers and sisters in the struggle; doing with what we can to
stand above the churn.

The churn gives not one iota, who you are, where you come from, nor the color of your skin. It will scoop your ass with no quarter.

Put simply

Life is tough enough, without any additional nonsense. So, let’s help one another the best we can.

In the stillness I can find my way

When do you feel most productive?

I’ve asked myself this question numerous times during my life, I never allow myself to honestly answer the question. Generally, I agree with whatever trending topic at the time. I did this because I didn’t want to be the person who went against the group.

As I wrote the previous sentence, I realized something. I’ve never been that person. I’ve always been a rebel, if you will, against anything I deemed foolish.

In the stillness of any time of the day, I can find my way of doing anything. What I mean by the stillness is quiet, tranquil, and relaxing. I do my best work during these times of the day. I suppose the reason is simple I’m able to think.

Closed Blinds

POETRY – MINDFULNESS

With a push of a button, the television screen goes blank, removing that annoying hum that fills our homes for the better part of the day. A hum we seldom realize exists until it has gone. Then, finally, we notice how peaceful your life has just become.

I sat down by my window
and opened the blinds

From my window, I see
a world absent of law

No quarter for those who want it
No quarter for those in need
There was none, even for those
who drop to their knees and plead.

From my window, I witness
the darkness of the light,

the woman adjusting her clothes
because she just made her rent in the backseat
the man whose rent vanished in a puff of smoke
the child who wonders about their next meal
because their father just drank it away

from my window, I see light
through the darkness

the young man helping the older couple
a reminder that there is still courtesy, although fading
the blooms of the flowers in an overgrown garden
steadily growing, steadily fighting,
as we should, like every moment was our last

from my window, I witness those
who will not bow

Those whose faith is unwavering
those who love unconditionally
with no concern for themselves
those who continue to fight
though is no sign of hope

In this window, I have seen
many things

things that you want to fix but cannot
things that make us cry,
even if it is silently amongst a hundred

The things that will make a stand on mountaintops and cheer
The things that will make the strongest of men get up and walk away

These things and much more represent the ideal I have spent my life fighting for.

No wonder I can never close the blinds.
